Chinese WhisperS
CHALLENGE:
- Many of the local elderly in China have lived through the cultural revolution. Many of their stories have never been heard.
-There is a real disconnect between the elderly and the youth.
-The elderly are increasingly isolated in the modern society.
MY ROLE:
I was the director & producer for this piece. From finding the space, to the elderly, to the creative team. I created a community following of 50,000 people via channels such as ‘Weibo’ & ‘Wechat’.
OUTCOME & LEARNING:
We carried out this project for 3 years, where we engaged with 150 local elderly, 500,000 people in the public (who knew of our work & attended), collaborated with 50 creative contributors over the years and kept developing our creative work.
INTENTION:
-My vision was to bring the local elderly together and co-create an interactive storytelling piece.
-I wanted to use old derelict buildings in the city as a backdrop for the series.
-The local elderly were a major part of the collaboration.
